With daylight savings now behind us for another year, that means one thing: Winter is coming!
It also means a number of other things, especially if you are like me and prefer to do the majority of your training outdoors. It means the days are shorter, so much of my training is in the dark. It is much colder, requiring increased determination just to get out of bed and out the door.
More importantly, it means an increased likelihood of getting sick!
There are a number of things you can do from a training, nutrition and supplement point of view to combat the Winter blues.
When training through Winter, it is always good to have a plan B. It can be very easy to hit the snooze button on those early Winter mornings. Who really wants to go riding in near freezing temperatures!
It is always a good idea to have a back up session, something that can be done indoors. For me it is the wind/turbo trainer for replicating bike sessions or the treadmill for replicating run session. Having this allows you to stay on top of your training schedule.
Nutrition also plays an important role in beating the Winter blues. Your body's immune system comes under increased strain during the colder months. My biggest issue is hay fever and sinus related issues going from the cold outside to the warmth inside repeatedly.
Monitoring and optimising your nutrition can help boost your immune system and keep you fighting fit and at your best.
To keep your nutrition in check you can always add in additional supplements. For me, a little extra vitamin C never goes astray. I also make sure to get my daily serve of Nuzest Good Green Stuff into my morning shake. I will often opt for an extra serve in my post workout shake when Winter really starts to get the better of me.
By having options in your training schedule, keeping on top of your nutrition and adding in supplements where needed, you will be more than equiped to beat the Winter blues and make sure you'll be firing on all cylinders in the warmer months.
